Look at Chrissy's Garden!!!!

From the vibrant rhythms of her Cuban roots to the deep resilience of her African-American heritage, my mother embodies a beauty that is both soft and enduring. Her life is a masterclass in cultivation—whether she is nurturing young minds or tending to the soil. As a dedicated daycare teacher who rose to become a director, she has spent decades planting seeds of knowledge and confidence in children. Now, she is extending that lifelong mission of growth into the earth itself, breaking ground on a community garden in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania.

Her journey into early childhood education began with a simple desire to provide a safe, enriching space for children to thrive. As a teacher, her classroom was defined by warmth, structured creativity, and an innate understanding of what a child needs to feel seen. Recognizing her natural leadership and vision, she transitioned into the role of daycare director. In this position, her impact multiplied. She did not just manage a facility; she built a sanctuary for families, mentoring staff and advocating for early literacy and emotional development. Her work as a director proved that leadership is not about authority, but about creating an environment where others can blossom.
Bringing that same nurturing spirit to McKees Rocks, she is now transforming a physical landscape through gardening. This project is a natural extension of her career in education. Just as she carefully tended to the distinct needs of every child in her care, she now approaches the soil with patience, learning the unique rhythms of the local climate and seasons. Her garden is designed to be more than a collection of plots; it is a shared space meant to foster community connection, provide fresh produce, and offer a peaceful retreat for her neighbors.
This garden serves as a beautiful tribute to her heritage. In Cuban and African-American traditions, cultivating the land is historically tied to resilience, self-reliance, and bringing people together around a shared table. By establishing this green space, she is honoring those roots while directly investing in the future of McKees Rocks. The dedication she once poured into lesson plans and childcare policies is now channeled into sowing seeds, building raised beds, and welcoming community members to join in the labor of love. My mother’s life reflects a profound truth: whether working in a classroom or a garden, her greatest joy lies in helping things grow.
